OpenStreetMap.org is a free implementation similar to other mapping services such as
Google, Yahoo and Microsoft maps. It allows users to register an account and then edit
the maps (in a similar way to Wikipedia editing), allowing for new streets, places of
interest and modifying existing content.
I've been working on OSM for a little while now and have just recently bought a GPS data logger
which will allow me to get out and about, recording locations which aren't already on the map. Currently,
large parts of Bolton aren't yet mapped so I'll be looking to fill in those blanks.
There are a number of ways you can help including:
- Filling in street names
- Add missing roads, paths, waterways, railways, etc
- Edit existing, incorrect roads
- Add locations and objects (i.e. post offices, supermarkets, traffic lights)
